N1.6bn Fraud: I Was Forced To Implicate Jonathan - Dudafa Tells Court

Waripamo-Owei Dudafa, a former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, has said that the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) obtained his statements under duress.

Dudafa made the claim when he testified in his trial-within-trial at the Federal High Court, Lagos, on Monday.

The defendant had earlier claimed that the statements he made to EFCC were not voluntarily made.

He said both his oral and written statements were all extracted through the use of maximum force during his detention in the commission’s facility.

Dudafa said during the period he was eclipsed with pain from a spinal cord ailment, adding that the commission denied him adequate medical treatment.

The former presidential aide said he was forced to write all the statements he wrote, and was induced to sign in exchange for freedom.

Dudafa said he was arrested on April 17, 2016, and kept in detention untill the evening of the following day without anybody explaining why he was arrested.

He said that he was eventually taken to EFCC’s office on Awolowo Road in Lagos, for interrogation, where he made four statements, including an asset declaration form which he described as a sham.

He said the operatives of the commission denied him access to food as his family members were barred from bringing him food.

“April 27 till May 12 was so tormenting. Sometimes I was taken out from the detention centre and kept in EFCC office between 8 a.m and 8 p.m, and sometimes until 11 p.m depending on their mood.

“The ailment I have today is a spinal cord dislocation. It was within that period of my torture and agony that my spinal cord got dislocated.

“I was not in the best frame to write statements but went on to force them from me. The document remains fake as they only brought out those items to nail me,’’ he said.

He also said the operatives denied him access to counsel as at the time the statements were extracted, adding that “in fact my lawyers were driven away’’.

Dudafa said EFCC officials had only given him paracetamol and aspirin, and allowed him to visit an in-house Medical Doctor when his situation worsened.

He said that the EFCC’s Doctor had referred him to a Military Hospital where tests revealed that he had a spinal cord injury and needed to see a specialist.

He informed the court that he was not taken to any specialist, adding that the commission turned down his family’s request to bring in a specialist to the facility to examine him.

“My Lord, I was dehumanised to the extent that I got scared of the people around me.

The mis-treatment was also extended to my immediate family as they froze my wife’s bank account and My Children’s Schools savings accounts in a bid to frustrate and break me down.

“When I realised that I did not make any statements voluntarily I raised objections,’’ he said.

During cross examination by Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, EFCC’s prosecutor, Dudafa admitted that he was cautioned before making the statements.

He said that he was also never forced to admit committing any crime in the statements.

He, however, insisted that he was asked to sign the statements.

Justice Mohammed Idris adjourned the case till Jan. 24 for continuation of the trial-within-trial.

EFCC had arraigned him and Iwejuo Joseph Nna alias Taiwo A. Ebenezer and Olugbenga Isaiah, before Justice Idris on 23-counts of conspiracy and concealment of crime proceeds.

They were accused of conspiring to conceal proceeds of crime amounting to over N1.6 billion on June 11, 2013.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

It was alleged that Dudafa, between June 1 and June 4, 2015, procured Nna and Ebiwise Resources to conceal N150 million being proceeds of crime.

"See The Future Of Business In Nigeria"

Change, they say, is the only constant thing in life. Change will continue to evolve in all sphere of human endeavor because mankind is constantly looking for new ways to improve life.

A research study once revealed that knowledge doubles itself in every field every five years. If you are therefore not on the lookout for the new emerging changes, you may become obsolete like an outdated software.

See for instance how change has occurred in these two fields below.

1. Money:

Money is simply a medium of exchange. Before the advent of money, the world engaged in trade by barter where you need to look for someone who has what you need and needs what you have. Imagine you have rice but couldn't find someone with kerosene. Serious hunger is loading.  Then, the world moved to the use of materials like cowries. It cancelled the problem of trade by barter.

But before anyone could blink an eyelid, coins became the reigning currency. Soon again, it has been substituted to currency notes which we use. Some now predict that the world is heading to the use of crypto currency. One thing is constant here: change

2. Production:

When it came to time to produce goods, people thought they could produce on their own. Soon, they recognized that they could not do it alone. There were just too many stages that needed handling and supervision. This made possible the employment of people in large numbers. Before the world got comfortable with this, there was a change to the use of machines instead of humans. I mean, machines do not collect salary, do they?

3. Business

Now, there is the world of business. It is currently undergoing its own change.

Business initially was about what you can do to make money. Time constraints and other factors led to change where people now work for others to earn a salary. This is also changing gradually as the new phase where business no longer requires physical presence is in place. I'm talking about online business. With an online business, you do not need to pay rents, pay salaries and the likes. There is nothing like delay in salaries either. You do not have to strain yourself in the traffic or sun to make money. Your computer or mobile phone is all you need. You are your own boss and you work at your own leisure time. Awesome, right?

A wise man said, "if you want to be rich, do not do what others are doing, do what others will start doing in future". The online world is the new face of business and is open to everybody. Those who take advantage of it early will be the biggest winners.

FG Tasked On Health Insurance For All Nigerians

T HE  Federal government, has been urged to ensure that all Nigerians are captured under the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, in order to ensure the attainment of universal healthcare in the country, even as government was tasked to provide more Primary Healthcare Centres in the country.

Giving the assertion recently, during the official opening of D-Rabboni Hospitals Ltd., Festac, Lagos,  President of the Society of Occupational and Environmental Health Physicians of Nigeria, SOEHPON, Dr. Okon Akiba, said the need to ensure  overall health and wellbeing of Nigerians was non-negotiable  and could only be assured through provision of innovative and dynamic medical services.

According to Akiba, who is the Managing Director/CEO, D-Rabboni Hospitals Ltd: “The Federal government should ensure that everyone is covered by health insurance so that there can be enough money in the pool of finances.

In an admonition, he said: “Because of our antecedents we know that health is business, so if there is enough money in the pool, then everyone that is registered and has a health plan would have access to healthcare.”

Speaking on the new health facility, he observed that it was a product of 30 years of his medical practice and leadership.

“Rabboni is designed to practice world class standard of ethical care. We are bringing something that is innovative, it is a wellness-based facility with 5-star hotel specifications and hospitality. You would only know that you are in a hospital when they begin to give you medications.

The outfit, which runs a 24-hour service, provides primary and secondary health care, services including  general and specialist medical care.

“As an experienced medical health practitioner, I am doing this with passion. We are going to offer world class innovative service because we are partnering with Paramount Labs. We intend to be objective and affordable.”

Declaring the centre open, former Governor of Cross Rivers State, Mr Donald Duke, who tasked the government on providing more PHCs, said it was at the primary care level that Nigerians in the  communities could benefit more from comprehensive healthcare services so that the national mortality rates would drop and quality of life would improve.

Shocking!! Mob Beats Suspected Thief To Death, 4 Arrested

Yenagoa—Police in Bayelsa State have arrested a 25-year-old indigene of Adamawa State and three others at Twon Brass in Brass Local Government Area of the state for allegedly beating a suspected thief to death.

Though about 33 suspects were reportedly arrested by the police over the incident that went viral on social media last week, the four were accused of beating the suspect, which led to his death.

The Chairman of Brass Local Government Area, Bello Bina, who confirmed the development, said the incident, which occurred a fortnight ago, nearly triggered a row between the Hausa community and their hosts on the Brass Island.

According to him, the arrested persons were accused of tying up the suspected thief before beating him to death for allegedly breaking into a petty trader’s shop in Twon Brass.

He said: “Nobody has the right to beat another person to death over stealing. It is jungle justice and it is a crime.

“We have intervened and the right thing will be done. Many of the Ijaw boys and the deceased’s family claimed that the arrest was partisan. But we have calmed all nerves and the Rule of Law must take root in Brass.”

He also confirmed that the suspects have been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the State Police Command and autopsy is expected to be conducted on the corpse.

Breaking!! Herdsmen Abduct Ex-Delta Council Boss, 2 Others

UGHELLI—THE immediate past transition committee Chairman for Ughelli North Local Government Area, Chief Friday Akpoyibo, has been abducted by suspected herdsmen along the Auchi-Abuja Road.

Though details of the incident was sketchy at press time, Vanguard gathered that a younger brother to Chief Akpoyibo and an unidentified male passenger, who were both travelling with the former chairman, were also abducted by the hoodlums.

A third passenger, female, who was said to have been with the victims, was left behind.

Confirming the incident yesterday, a former aide to Akpoyibo told Vanguard on phone that the former Chairman, who is a younger brother to retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Marvel Akpoyibo, was abducted, Sunday on his way to Abuja.

He said: “He was going to Abuja to attend the inauguration of the recently-appointed executives of the Niger Delta River Basin Development Authority, NDRBDA, when the hoodlums struck.

“They were taken into the bush after being disposed of their personal items,” the former aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added.

Ighalo Too Expensive For West Ham –Pulis

Manager Tony Pulis thinks West Brom will be priced out of a deal to sign Nigeria international Odion Ighalo.

The Baggies are in the market for a Premier League striker following the sale of Saido Berahino to Stoke City, and have the Watford number 24 on the top of their wishlist.

Ighalo
Pulis has admitted that the transfer has not been sealed yet because Ighalo is too expensive.

“I think Watford want too much so I don’t think we’ll be in that one,” Pulis said. Ighalo, 27, played his 100th game for the Hornets in their 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday.

Enugu Records First Rainfall In 2017

Enugu metropolis, on Monday, recorded its first rainfall of the year, which led to reduction in the temperature in the coal city.

The rain started at about 2:45p.m and lasted for over 30minutes.

The downpour led to the washing of roof-tops and drains that had been dotted by silts occasioned by the harmattan.

Reacting, a resident of the city, Mr Chidi Maduka, told newsmen that the rain had led to a cool weather, which most people of the coal city had been praying for.

Maduka said that the early rainfall also signifies more rainfall in the course of the year.

“We pray God that we have plenty of rain this year to help us grow food to check the current hardship in the land, “he said.

Another resident, Mr Samuel Edeh, said that the first rain would check heat rash and itching, especially among children and infants.

“Heat had been one thing disturbing children at night in crowded areas of the city; while the coolness brought about by this rain will check this.

“Residents, especially infants will now have a very cool night sleep, “Edeh said.

JAMB, NYSC Move Against Fraudulent Practices

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Youth Service Corps have resolved to step up measures to check fraudulent practices by prospective corps members.

This was the subject of discussion during the visit by the JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, to the Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters.

Professor Oloyede noted that applications for change of date of birth being forwarded to JAMB were mostly from over-aged persons who want to get mobilized for the national service.

He explained that since his assumption of duty as Registrar, JAMB had been taking measures to block sharps practices, while also seeking enhanced inter-agency cooperation in that regard.

In his remarks, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, described JAMB as a critical stakeholder in the NYSC, and welcomed the agency’s renewed commitment to eliminating sharp practices.

Kazaure said a bilateral committee would be set to address all the areas of concern raised by the Registrar.

He thanked the JAMB Management for the cordial relationship with the NYSC.

PDP asks Shehu: Was S/Kaduna massacre an action to teach lesson for not voting APC?

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lambasted Garba Shehu, the official Spokesperson to President Mohammadu Buhari, over his comments on the Southern Kaduna killings on Channels television today Monday.

PDP asked ”was Garba Shehu inferring that the hapless people of southern Kaduna were singled out for genocide because they elected a PDP senator? Or that the People invited such mindless violence upon themselves by choosing to be different in a sea of APC domination? Or is the Southern Kaduna massacre really an action to teach the people a bitter lesson for voting PDP and not APC?

It is really unimaginable that any reasonable person can make such a reckless statement.

Governor Umahi, Elechi Not Comparable - Senator Onwe

Umahi, Elechi not comparable – Senator Onwe.

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Senator Emmanuel Onwe, has opened up on the strategies being adopted by the Ebonyi State Government towards uplifting the state. Onwe said prudent management of the state’s resources and zero tolerance for corruption, have been responsible for the successes recorded by the administration of Governor Dave Umahi.

Among other issues, Onwe declared that there is no basis for comparison between the immediate past governor of the state, Chief Martins Elechi and Umahi.

Ebonyi State government targets 54,000 hectares for the 2016/2017 dry season farming. How is the state going about this?
Steadily and successfully! Every local government is expected to identify at least, 15,000 hectares of land to be put on the rice production. This is the only way in which the government would attain its target of producing at least, 10 percent of the total rice requirement in Nigeria.

The current consumption is six million metric tonnes of rice and Nigeria spent about $5 billion importing it. Ebonyi saw this as an opportunity. Producing 600,000 which represent 10 percent of the figures we are looking at would require at least 195,000 square hectares of land. So, the target is attainable. The step-by-step approach is probably what the Commissioner for Agriculture is talking about because this year, Ebonyi has successfully put about, 30,000 hectares of land under rice production and that is bound to step up next year and until we meet our target. And the current effort is to saturate Ebonyi so that we have domestic self sufficiency in rice production and then, expand outwards to identify other markets within the country.

•During your media tour, you spoke about silos for grain storage
which you said the Federal Government should allow the state to use. Have you made any move in that direction?

The governor has made direct request to the Minister of Agriculture and I am quite certain that the governor is highly respected within those quarters and I also know that the Minister of Agriculture is truly an honourable man. So, I think that would be sorted because it doesn’t serve anybody any purpose to have such fantastic, strategic facilities that lie in waste.

•Ebonyi is also known for salt production. What is the government doing about that?

There is the Uburu Salt Lake, there is the Enyigba Salt Mine; there are strategies in place to make sure that every natural resource that exists in Ebonyi, is properly exploited. That is going to be a strategic step-by-step process. You can’t put all your fingers in your mouth at the same time.

•Primary and secondary schools in Ebonyi are free and the country is in an economic recession. How are you able to fund it?

That is the prudence I have talked about. The governor is a very prudent manager of resources. You see, probably between Ekiti and Ebonyi, they vie for the last position on a monthly basis as to who comes last in federal allocations. The average allocation that goes to Ebonyi is about N2.1 billion, and that is in a good month. There were months it was not quite up to that. I remember that either in April or March, we received about N1,450,000,000 in allocation. But the elimination of waste and of course, the total and absolute zero tolerance for corruption has meant that every kobo that goes to Ebonyi is well utilized. That is why Ebonyi is still able to maintain school feeding, free education at primary and secondary levels, subvention to the university which is the highest in the whole of the South East, subvention to a college of education, subvention to all the 13 General hospitals and has consistently paid the 13th month to all the workers in Ebonyi State. And a couple of months ago, the workers’ salaries in Ebonyi state were increased by five percent. You can’t beat that.

•How about the Internally Generated Revenue?

Very low! Less than N100 million a month! But with our efforts in the Agricultural sector, the prospects of hitting our target of at least N1 billion a month are very high.

•What about tourism? Are you also looking toward that direction?

I think the efforts are there to expand it to first, natural or eco tourism, and the groundwork is ongoing. The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism is working hard in that regard. And as the months go by, all those efforts will be unfolding. But like I said, these are step-by-step strategic plans to lift Ebonyi.

•Ebonyi under Elechi and Ebonyi under Umahi: what is the difference?

There is no comparison.
No basis for comparison?
No basis whatsoever for comparison. The government of Umahi is a government that is collegiate in nature. By that I mean it is consultative, all-embracing and focussed really in ensuring that the benefits of administration touch everyone, and the essence of open democratic participation is fully realised.

It is also a government that has a very deep sense of history. For the first time, Ebonyi State is going to have a state capital worthy of the name. The governor has constructed about 250 kilometres of roads in the capital, and along the trans-Saharan Africa highway that leads all the way from North Africa, through Nigeria, into Cameroun, passes through Abakaliki. There are about three flyovers being erected along that road and all three will be completed and deployed to full use within 2017.

In every single local government in Ebonyi, 13 of them, there are 15 kilometres of roads being constructed. And youth empowerment has never reached the impressive level it is at the moment. Women empowerment is exactly the same. So, you take all of these things, very challenging balancing act, and there is no cronyism, there is no family dynasty, and there is no outrageous disbursement of Ebonyi funds in the name of security votes. With all of these, I don’t see where I can even begin to make any comparison at all.

•Prior to the 2015 elections in the state, there were different factions. Are you together at the moment?

Everybody is together. As I said, the governor is running a collegiate system of administration in Ebonyi. Of course, you will always find fringe elements in any established system of public administration, but by and large, they have pretty little impact except in isolated instances of notoriety or outright nuisance. The governor desires leadership by consent not by coercion. He has devoted enormous amount of energy and invested considerable political capital in creating a consensual political atmosphere in Ebonyi.

•Security of lives and property: what measures have the government put in place?

The results would reflect whatever the measures are, which is to say, it has been a while since people heard of tragic tales of bloody events from Ebonyi. Apart from pockets of incidents which are to be expected in normal circumstances, however, what used to obtain is no more. The areas of notorious conflicts, the tragedy that happened in a place called Ezza/Ezillo in 2009, such matters have been effectively and finally resolved. The displaced communities are being settled by the Government of Ebonyi State because land has been carved out for them and it is being constructed like a modern settlement right now. By and large, the atmosphere of peace and security in the state is relatively superior.

•What necessitated your media tour of Lagos?

It was long overdue. We needed to make an acquaintance with those who set the news agenda and to introduce the flagship economic programme of Ebonyi State, which is agriculture and in a reductive sense, rice production.

•Apart from agriculture, how has Governor Umahi utilized the N8.4 billion loan he got?

Whether the figure you just quoted to me is correct or not, I am absolutely, 100 percent certain that every kobo he has borrowed, has been prudently, directly, effectively and relevantly spent. I have never met a man that is more prudent in financial management. And this is not propaganda because I made a point that the greatest gift that he has given to me as his Commissioner for Information, is not to convert me into a propagandist. I do not tell fiction, I tell it the way it is. Every single statement I make about the governor and government of Ebonyi State, are verifiable and touchable. Not just me making the claims that the whole country is astonished quite frankly by the rapid changes taking place in Ebonyi.

IPOB: Nnamdi Kanu To Drag Buhari, Security Agencies To UN, ICC

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has threatened to drag the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to the United Nations (UN) and International Criminal Court (ICC).

His lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, said Kanu will go to any legal length to get justice over his incarceration.

“We must get justice, we are at the ECOWAS court already from there if they (the FG) do not obey the orders we will head to the African Union, United Nations and ICC,” he told Naij.

“We must compel the federal government; we are all partners in democracy and must ensure we protect this

“And let me also say this, all executives, presidents, governors and all, their immunity will elapse someday and they will face justice at the ICC.”

Ejiofor added that his team was building its case against the president, some Nigeria security agencies and some public officers.

“We have various indicting reports on the FG on the killings of IPOB members and Biafra supporters including the Amnesty report on the killing and we will make good use of all this”.

IPOB recently stated that the Federal Government cannot win the trial against Kanu with the primitive law operated in the country.

Junaid Mohammed To Presidency: "Stop Lying To Nigerians About Buhari's Health"

Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, yesterday lashed out at the Presidency saying they should stop lying to Nigerians over the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also said Nigerians cannot afford to have another constitutional crises due to Mr. President’s health.

The Presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu had attacked Mohammed on Monday saying he is suffering from pathological cynicism.

According to Shehu, “Mohammed’s kind of critics is toxic to national progress because they are only primarily interested in destroying every positive effort and achievements of the government and we advise Nigerians to be wary of prejudiced and biased critics like Dr. Junaid

Mohammed who are more interested in personal publicity than respecting facts and figures about their claims”.

But reacting to Sheu’s statement, Mohammed said the Presidential spokesperson should stop telling Nigerians lies about his health just as he maintained that General Sanni Abacha remains one of the healthiest President Nigeria ever had.

His words, “I believe Sheu is under pressure which is why he attacked me. However, I believe strongly they need to stop lying to Nigerians about Mr Presidents health. Can they actually tell Nigerians what this medical leave or routine check-up is? They don’t seems to be telling us the truth”.

Mohammed who maintained he has been President Buhari’s friend since when he was a secnd lieutenant in the Army said he cannot shy away from telling the President the truth anytime he misfires.

He said, “If I am to comment on issues that concern Nigerians, I won’t shy away from telling President Buhari the home truth anywhere he is making mistakes. I criticized General Abacha as Head of State and told him some truths in private and sometimes face to face. I believe if people can challenge their friends in power, it shows they are not intimidated by the powerful”.

“If Aisha Buhari can say what she said about her husband, I think the President needs to check himself and retrace his steps on some issues that concerns the country. I think the question the President needs to ask himself is that after one he has taken over the reigns of power, what has changed? Is Nigeria better off than when he took over on May 29, 2015? The truth is that Nigeria is worse off today than when Buhari took over the reigns of power.

“Every Nigerian today is worse off and nothing seems to be working under this government. Some who are rich in 2015 cannot say same today due to the economic woes that Nigeria is presently experiencing and we cannot continue to close our eyes off it”.

He further explained, “This administration has failed in tamming the economic woes that seems to have turned everyone poor in present day Nigeria. Even though the administration made some giant strides in the fight against Boko Haram, the country is still not safe as people still live in fears even in Kano today. And there is also political crises in the party where President won his own election. So the President seems to be at war with everyone including the National Assembly members”.

He however maintained, “I believe President Buhari should engage in turning around the fortunes of Nigeria economically, politically and security wise. By now, his administration should have stopped blaming the Jonathan government for their woes. I believe that in Politics, you take assets and liabilities”.

ASUU Bans UNILORIN From Academic And Non-Academic Activities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its members nationwide to boycott all academic and allied activities at the University of Ilorin.

This was part of the resolutions reached at the end of its Awka National Executive Council meeting, a copy of the sanctions which was made available to newsmen in Ibadan by the Chairman University of Ibadan Chapter of the union, Dr Deji Omole.

ASUU wielded the big stick following what it called University of Ilorin administration persistent acts of lawless, arbitrariness, violation of human and trade union rights and persecution of loyal members.
Also, University of Ilorin academic staff will also not be allowed to carry out any academic activity on any public universities in Nigeria.

ASUU noted that despite efforts at resolving the crisis in the institution, the university management and its sponsored groups were fuelling the crisis while alleging that it forcefully deduct check-off dues without remitting it to the national body.

ASUU NEC resolved to impose sanctions on the groups and university administration, noting that for the duration of the sanctions, academic Staff of the University of Ilorin would no longer enjoy the cooperation, collaboration or participation of academics of other Nigerian public Universities, in the following areas of academic and related activities at all levels.
These included teaching, research and supervision of students; setting, moderation or assessment of examinations; external assessment for professorial for professorial cadre appointments or promotions; sabbatical, visiting, part-time and adjunct appointments, accreditation of institutions, colleges and programmes and courses, collaborative research, peer review of journal articles and patronage of journals; attendance of conferences, workshops, seminars and other related activities;

Omole further hinted that the union had also directed members to boycott all UniIlorin based journals, quarterly and newsletters, while articles from academic staff of the University of Ilorin shall not be accepted by journals for peer review and or publication in other Nigerian Universities.

“Despite all intervention efforts by the Academic Staff Union of Universities since 2001, the University of Ilorin administration has persisted in acts of lawlessness, arbitrariness, violation of human and trade union rights, and persecution of loyal members.

“Contrary to the law and despite the ruling of the National Industrial Court, the University has continued to prevent the Union from functioning on its campus. “The University has also continued to forcefully collect check-off money from academics of the university in the name of the Union without remitting it to the Union. The Union is therefore bound to protect the principles of democracy and the exercise of freedom in the academia, and also insist on the right to function through its own accredited representatives on Nigerian University campuses,” he added.
According to him, NEC at its meeting at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, recognized distinct groups that have emerged in creating and prolonging the crisis at the University of Ilorin.

He said these include the following: principal officers of University of Ilorin, administration members of previous University of Ilorin, administration who were and are still active in generating and sustaining the crisis and members of the illegal “excos” from 2001 to 2014; Others were members of the current illegal “exco”; and other academics of the University of Ilorin who are aiding and abetting the crisis and illegality.

“For the avoidance of doubt, academic staff of the University of Ilorin should not participate in any of the above listed academic activities in other Nigerian public Universities.

“Similarly, academic staff of other Nigerian public Universities shall not participate in any of the listed activities in the University of Ilorin.

“These sanctions shall be complied with by all members of the

We’ve Lost 6,000 Cows In Southern Kaduna" — Miyetti Allah

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) has said its members lost no fewer than 6,000 cows to crisis in Southern Kaduna in the last few years.

Speaking at a news conference organised on behalf of the Kaduna State and Zone 3 chapters of MACBAN, on Saturday, the state secretary of the association, Musa Mohammed Gambo, maintained that the Fulani were also victims of the violence.

According to him, the crisis in the area claimed the lives of many of his kinsmen.

He alleged that the recent crisis was ignited by some religious leaders who were enemies of peace

“How can we be involved in the killing of our brothers, whom our great grandparents have lived with and with whom we are living with our children and wives?

“Unfortunately, we have been accused of being the perpetrators of the crisis, and even some are saying that Miyetti Allah will carry out reprisals. At no time did we issue any such irresponsible article to any media.

“As a peace-loving association, which has contributed immensely to the peace and reconciliation efforts not only in southern Kaduna but also in the entire country, we will never descend so low as to advocate crisis,” Gambo said.

Meanwhile, the Jema’a Emirate Council in Kaduna State has said that the emir of Jema’a, Alhaji Muhammad Isah II, was attacked by some disgruntled youths at Samaru Kataf in Zango Kataf.

The council was reacting to the denial of the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) in some media outlets that the emir was not attacked.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, the deputy Chief Imam of Jema’a Central Mosque, Alhaji Kabir Kassim, alleged that on January 17, 2017, after attending a security meeting in Kaduna, the emir’s convoy was attacked by some armed youths and that three vehicles were destroyed.

Shun pipeline vandalism, Delta Waterways chairman tells N-Delta youths

CHAIRMAN of Delta State Waterways and Land Security Committee, Chief Boro Opudu has appealed to people from the Niger Delta to maintain the peace and avoid any form of pipeline vandalism saying government can only address the development needs of the people in an atmosphere of peace.

While he commended the recent visit of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to the Niger Delta, Opudu called for quick take-off of the Maritime University at Okerenkoko.

In a statement, Chief Opudu said: “The recent visit of the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to the Niger Delta, which was a fact-finding missipn, is a commendable development because the visit has clearly shown that the existing structures and facilities at Kurutie (the temporary site for the Maritime University) are enough for the University to take off.

“This confidence-building and fact-finding mission heralds readiness of the Federal Government to engage the Niger Delta positively on development matters particularly when this is translated to reality in no distant time,as the Niger Delta needs less talk and more visible action of real development.”

Calling on Niger Deltans to eschew violence he said the Federal Government can no longer give insecurity excuses to dodge its task of developing the region.

He said: “With the positive feelers of pragmatic development of the Niger Delta heralded by the Vice-President, I hereby appeal and call on all Niger Deltans to maintain the peace and avoid any form of pipeline vandalism as government can only address the development needs of the people in an atmosphere of peace. Peace maintained in the Niger, the Federal government can no longer give insecurity excuses to dodge its task of developing us.”

In addition, Chairman of Delta State Waterways and Land Security Committee said “As further indicator of its intention to develop the Niger Delta signalled by the Vice-President’s recent visit, the Federal Government should quicken the take-off of the Maritime University at Okerenkoko. The moment the Maritime University takes off in no distant time, it will boost the confidence of the Niger Delta people in the Buhari-led government and put an end to feelings and thoughts of alienation, antagonism, persecution, deliberate underdevelopment and sidelining of Niger Deltans. Development of the Niger Delta in project-execution and quick take-off of the Maritime University will give a sense of belonging to Niger Delta region.

“The visit of the Vice-President to the Niger Delta is an eloquent testimony of President Buhari’s readiness to engage the Niger Delta in a positive way and this demands that Niger Deltans key into this new development by avoding any divisive issue bound to distract attention away from the ideals of this confidence-building and fact-finding visit. The word is peace and collective puruit of development in the Niger Delta in line with best global practices.”

Please Pray For Buhari, APC Governor Appeals To Nigerians

Nigerians have been urged to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari rather than heap blames on the country's number one citizen.

This call was made by Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state on Saturday, January 21, during an event organised to honour Aliyu Wamakko, the immediate past governor of the state, Daily Post reports.

According to the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, President Buhari has done a lot to reduce the prowess of Boko Haram terrorists in the country, and this is just one of the many things he is doing to make Nigeria a better place for all.

Nigerians should pray for President Muhammadu Buhari rather than blame him.

He said: "The president has succeeded in tackling the problem of insurgency in the North East while other security challenges are receiving the necessary attention.

“The once dreadful Sambisa forest has now been cleared of insurgents and the happy story goes on.

“President Buhari is also doing his best to doggedly fight corruption, diversify the economy and reduce poverty and unemployment.

”The president, therefore, needs the support and fervent prayers of all Nigerians, irrespective of creed, religion or ethnicity.”

Meanwhile, reports that President Buhari has passed away in far away London has been denied by his media aide, Garba Shehu, who replied in a very angry manner to the reports about his principal's health status.

The disturbing report had first been broken by an alleged fake Metro (UK) site that "quoted" the Nigerian mission in the country as confirming the president’s death.

But in his reaction, Garba Shehu, the Buhari’s spokesperson, said: “He is alive and well! President Buhari is not magical. He cannot be holidaying in the UK and be in Germany, dead or alive at the same time.

Power generation drops to 2662 megawatts on Sunday – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said that the nation’s power generation capacity dropped from 3,959 megawatts on Jan. 4 to 2,662 megawatts on Jan. 22.

The Nigerian Electricity System Operator (SO) website, a sub agency of TCN, disclosed the figure in its daily forecast on power generation data in Lagos on Sunday.

TCN attributed the drop to low water levels at the hydro power stations and dearth of gas to the power generating companies.

TCN said the total output of 2,662.20 megawatts from all the generation companies on Sunday had been transferred to the 11 distribution companies across the country.

According to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) operational report for Jan. 4, the power sector hit a peak generation of 4,959 megawatts but dropped to 2,662.20 megawatts on Jan. 22.

NESI said the sector recorded highest system frequency of 51.32Hz and lowest system frequency of 48.52 Hz, while the highest and the lowest voltage recorded on Sunday were 372KV and 300KV, respectively.

An official of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), who preferred anonymity, told NAN that electricity generation had been dwindling due to challenge of accessing gas by generation companies.

The official said that low level water levels at the country’s hydro thermal stations also contributed to the drop in generation.

He said that most hydro stations are currently confronted with low water challenges to generate energy.

The TCN official said that this often caused system collapse when the system scrabbled to distribute energy from the grid to distribution companies and the quantum of energy was not sufficient.

According to him, it is a challenging period for power sector but it will get better once the hydro swing into high water level and gas becomes available.

He attributed the drop in generation to the attack launched against pipeline facilities belonging to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) on Jan. 17 around Ugheli in Delta State.

Similarly, a top official of Egbin Power Station, who also pleaded anonymity, said that the power plant, with a capacity of 1,320 megawatts, now generates 340 megawatts due to gas constraint.

The official said that the 340 megawatts Egbin generated was wheeled out to the national grid at 6.00 am on Sunday.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, had on Friday said that the sabotage of power assets by militants prevented Nigeria from generating 7,000 MW of electricity.

“Today, at its most frugal, the nation’s power grid would support 6,500MW; pushed to its limit, it would carry 7,200MW.

“So it is not true when you hear that the grid capacity is not more than 5,000MW. It is growing every day and more projects are coming up.

“We have completed some and more are still coming up. So that is where we are,’’ Fashola said at the Nextier Power Dialogue in Abuja on Friday.

The Minister said while power was out due to attacks in one axis, the expansion of either the grid or gas supply was kept alive on another axis and hydro power was also being expanded.

Trump’s Inauguration: Fayose Lacks Understanding Of International Politics - APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has chided Governor Ayodele Fayose over comment on non-invitation of President Muhammadu Buhari to the weekend inauguration of President Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United
States, describing the governor as a “reckless interloper and shameless busy-body” who trivialises issues and dabbles into matters he has no competence in order to present a larger-than-life image of himself.

The party also warned the governor and Ekiti State Judiciary over alleged plot to manipulate the courts in all murder cases allegedly involving the governor, stressing that the party was monitoring all activities by the governor and other individuals to manipulate the cases in favour of the suspects to exonerate them in the murders of eminent Ekiti sons and daughters over political disagreements.

In a remark that sparked national outrage at the weekend, Fayose had mocked Buhari, deriding him for non-invitation by President Trump to his inauguration, citing the American President’s contempt for Buhari over alleged intolerance for the opposition and other anti-democratic practices.

But reacting in a statement on Sunday, Publicity Secretary Taiwo Olatunbosun, described Fayose as a man that lacked deep understanding of international politics and diplomacy and who had “elevated gangsterism, hooliganism and thuggery to an act of political valour”.

“Because Fayose is not educated enough to understand the dynamics and perspectives of international politics and diplomacy, he has reduced the American international and diplomatic politics to the beer parlour politics of muscle-flexing he runs in Ekiti State where all issues are trivialised and individualised for personal benefits to the detriment of the greater good of the people.

“It is a pity that an uninformed upstart is the one calling the shots in the Land of Honour in Ekiti State where knowledge-based information and integrity are the fountains of our development.

“Fayose does not have this, hence he was uninformed about the information in public space that Heads of States and Governments across the globe had no need to attend Trump’s inauguration in Washington but would be represented by their heads of missions in America.

“Apparently not aware of this information and unwilling to be educated on the new American policy thrust, Fayose rolled out the drums in ignorance to celebrate the absence of the President of his country on that important world stage,” he said.

Olatunbosun regretted the governor’s “show of shame”, saying, however, that Fayose’s inadequacies and garrulous conduct did not represent the collective attitude of Ekiti people to the pre-eminence of Nigeria’s image in international politics and diplomacy.

“Nigerians should see Fayose as lacking in Ekiti finesse and, therefore, should be seen as an unblemished poster boy of what he is generally known for all over the world as can be explained in many alleged criminal cases hanging on his neck in courts and the agencies of government, which does not represent the image of Ekiti people in the context of national politics.

“Because of Fayose’s moral nature and value that reeks of boisterous and violent essence of a street life, it has become practically impossible to purge him of always trivialising honourable and responsible political opposition platform that he has turned to the column of fools and plateau for jejune jesters,” he explained.

Olatunbosun also said that the party was in possession of the secret plots to relist murder cases allegedly involving Fayose for re-trial to get all the cases dismissed to save his neck.

“We understand that Dr Ayodeji Daramola and Tunde Omojola’s cases are being pushed for retrial to get them dismissed to enable Fayose save his neck.

“He started this in alleged secret trial late last year before the plot leaked, but this was after the court first struck out the case for ‘lack of diligent prosecution’ in a secret trial that the families of the deceased in a trial that he desperately needs outright dismissal.

“We call the attention of the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Mr Justice Ayodeji Daramola, to this planned travesty of justice, pleading that he should watch the activities of his judicial officials in the handling of these cases.

“While we will also keep monitoring these cases that have generated a lot of public interest, we hereby call the attention of the National Judicial Council (NJC) to the activities of Ekiti State judiciary to ensure that the victims of political assassinations in the state and their families get justice,” he concluded.

Troops Enter The Gambia To Secure Barrow’s Return

West African troops entered The Gambia Sunday to secure President Adama Barrow’s arrival from neighbouring Senegal, as controversy erupted over the assurances offered to Yahya Jammeh to guarantee his exit.

Jammeh flew out of The Gambia on Saturday, ending 22 years at the helm of the tiny west African nation, and landed in Equatorial Guinea a few hours later where he is expected to settle with his family.

The Senegalese general leading a joint force of troops from five African nations said soldiers had nonetheless entered The Gambia to “control strategic points to ensure the safety of the population and facilitate… Barrow’s assumption of his role.”

A journalist in the Gambian border town of Farafenni saw a convoy crossing the frontier on Sunday morning, which would leave them several hours to reach Banjul.

Senegalese forces had briefly crossed into the former British colony on Thursday but pulled out shortly afterwards, with Sunday’s troop movement the first by soldiers from the joint force.

Marcel Alain de Souza, a top official with the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS), which organised the deployment, said pro-Jammeh elements and mercenaries remained on the ground and had open fired as troops crossed the border.

Adama Barrow
“They were neutralised,” he said in a statement, without elaborating.

De Souza said the country “could not be left open” for long, however, and that Barrow must be in place “as soon as possible”.

“A country must have a government, but the security conditions required the troops we have sent to secure Banjul and other towns,” he said.
 Comfortable terms –

Following Barrow’s win in the December 1 election, Jammeh refused to step down, triggering weeks of uncertainty that almost ended in a full military intervention.

The longtime leader, wearing his habitual white flowing robes, waved to supporters before boarding a small, unmarked plane at Banjul airport alongside Guinea’s President Alpha Conde after two days of talks over a departure deal.
He left behind a small minority of diehard supporters, some of whom wept as his plane departed.

The choice of Equatorial Guinea for his exile had helped ease concerns that Jammeh might interfere in his nation’s politics if he stayed in Guinea, whose border is not far from The Gambia’s eastern region.

The strongman personally controlled certain sections of the security forces, and his long tenure was marked by systematic rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and arbitrary detention.

But critics have raised concerns over the wording of a statement issued by the UN, ECOWAS and the African Union that seemed to offer Jammeh comfortable guarantees for his future.

“No legislative measures” would be taken that would infringe the “dignity, security, safety and rights” of Jammeh or his family, it said, noting that he could return when he pleased and that property “lawfully” belonging to him would not be seized.

Equatorial Guinea is not a signatory to the Rome Statute that established the International Criminal Court, meaning Jammeh would not be extradited in the event he was charged with crimes against humanity or other serious offences.

One Banjul-based diplomat described the provision for Jammeh to return to The Gambia without hindrance as ill-advised.

Experts told AFP the document was not legally binding and would be left to the interpretation of the new government.

– ‘Democracy is back’ –

Jammeh took power in a 1994 coup from the country’s only other president since independence from Britain, Dawda Jawara, making this The Gambia’s first democratic transition of power.

“We are going to wait for Barrow at the airport all the way to State House. Before we were scared to com
e out,” said security guard Babacar Jallow, describing Jammeh as “a killer. With Jammeh gone, all eyes will be on the Barrow administration as they make their first steps as a government of reform and development.
“The will of the people has come to be — at last,” said Isatou Touray, a key official in the government-in-waiting.

“Democracy is back, you can’t stop the people.”
The first priority will be to ensure the safe return of tens of thousands of people who have fled in recent weeks fearing a bloody end to the crisis, Touray said on Saturday.

The crisis had also sparked the exodus of thousands of foreign visitors, dealing a potentially devastating blow to a country which earns up to 20 percent of its income from tourism.

Memo Targeted At Muslims, Not Christians - Katsina State University React

The authorities of the Umaru Yar’Ádua University, Katsina, have denied discriminating against Christian students in the approval granted a students religious association to operate on its campus.
The Acting Dean of Student Affairs of the University, Sulaiman Kankara, had in January 17 memo informed students of a new guideline for the registration of clubs and associations in the institution.
In the circular, Dr. Kankara indicated that participation in clubs and associations, including departmental ones, were strictly optional and that no student should be compelled to pay dues.
He also outlawed the formation of tribal and local government associations in the university.
But the controversial part of the memo which made the document to go viral was the dean’s pronouncement that the “Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) is the only religious association allowed to operate on campus.”
After the memo was shared on social media, the university came under ferocious attacks from many Nigerians, with some commentators saying the guideline was part of government’s plot to Islamise Nigeria.
But when contacted on Sunday morning, Dr. Kankara said that aspect of the guideline was actually targeted at Islamic groups which were beginning to mushroom on campus, creating division among students of the same faith.
The dean said, “Actually there is one misconception in the memo. But the fact of the matter is that in Umaru Yar’Ádua University, there is no association known as Christian Students Association.

“There is one religious association and subsidiary Islamic students associations like the Tijjanniya Students Movement in Nigeria, Academic Forum of Islamic Movement in Nigeria and many associations like that.
“They are Islamic students association. So what we want is to have a single union which will be the mouthpiece of muslim students and that is the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria.
“It has nothing to do with any Christian group because up till now, I have not received any application requesting registration of Christian Students Society.
“And once they do that, we are ready to register them. Even as at last week, we said the two religious group to be recognised by the university will be the Muslim one and one from Christian side.
“Up till now we are to receive any application for the registration of any Christian association in the university from any group.”

Rann misfire: Death toll hits 236

The death toll on last Tuesday’s accidental bombing of an IDPs camp in Rann, Borno State, by the Nigerian Air Force has risen to 236

Chairman, Kalabalge local government area Babagana Malaria disclosed this yesterday while briefing the Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai.

Buratai was in the area for an assessment tour of the affected community.

Malaria, who demanded adequate compensation for survivors, said over 200 of the deceased had been buried by their relations.

Malaria said: “With what happened, we are begging Mr. President to compensate us.

“Many people have lost their lives; most of them were the bread winners.

“About 234 people and it’s not a small number; we need to compensate these people. 234 buried by the community. And it’s even more than this.

“The report I received from Maiduguri this morning was that two who are in the hospital have also died. Therefore we need to be compensated seriously.”

Recall that estimates by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on Thursday put the death toll at over 170, adding that the figure was expected to rise.

Nwodo inciting Ndigbo, scuttling Igbo presidency in 2023 – Buhari support group

A political pressure group, Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) Enugu State chapter, on Sunday came hard on the new president of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, accusing him of inciting Ndigbo against President Muhammadu Buhari.

The BSO equally warned the Nwodo-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo to tread the path of caution in order not to derail the emergence of a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction in 2023 after the second tenure of President Muhammau Buhari.

According to Enugu BSO, experience in the Nigerian political trajectory was that no one ethnic nationality could become president of Nigeria without the support of the other ethnic groups and therefore for Ndigbo to become president in 2023, they need the support of others.

The group was reacting to the press conference addressed by President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo last Thursday at the Ohanaeze Secretariat in Enugu, where threw his weight behind pro-Biafra agitators, just as he accused Buhari of marginalizing Ndigbo.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Chibueze Eze, on Sunday, BSO wondered why Nwodo should be inciting Ndigbo against President Buhari, whereas the President sent him a congratulatory message, expressing his readiness to work with the new Ohanaeze leadership.

Eze said while they agree with the President General in age long marginalization of Ndigbo, it was their considered view that Chief Nwodo unexpectedly did not learn from the great Zik of Africa’s thesis that ‘no condition is permanent’ and therefore “resorted to grandstanding, placed prejudice over patriotism and played holier than thou attitude.”

Nwodo, the BSO spokesman said, “acted like a Rabbit covered in a hole over the years and when it is time to dig open the hole, the Rabbit started shouting, without seeing the light at the end of the dark tunnel.”

The statement read: “It is with rapt attention that Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) Enugu State Chapter, listened to the press conference of the new Ohaneze Ndigbo President General, our dear elder brother, orator and show man, Chief John Nnia Nwodo last Thursday, 19 January, 2017. We wanted to gloss it over, until we saw the lavish advert publication of his personal statement being decorated as that of Ohaneze Ndigbo, when in actual fact Ohaneze Ndigbo is a non-partisan socio-cultural Organisation.

“And most importantly, the statement is neither the resolution of Ohaneze Ndigbo National Executive Committee nor that of Imeobi, as provided in Ohaneze Ndigbo’s Constitution.

“BSO is aware that for Ndigbo to take such far reaching decisions, as proclaimed, Imeobi the inner caucus of Ohaneze Ndigbo had to be summoned; this was not the case.

“If Imeobi is to be summoned tomorrow, we are sure majority of Ndigbo will differ with Chief Nwodo, on the position of IPOB, as was demonstrated in the 1996 and 2014 Constitutional Conferences, where some states like Enugu and Ebonyi States voted against region.
“BSO is in league with majority of Ndigbo and Nigerians in general who despite the existing fault lines, have high hopes of Nigeria’s resurgimento to prosperity and greatness, where justice, equality and fairness will triumph.

“We also foresee the emergence of president of Igbo extraction in Nigeria after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight year tenure and hence caution for tact and less inflammatory statements, especially from non-partisan Ohaneze Ndigbo”, Eze said.

He stated they had thought that Chief Nwodo, an intellectual, would not repeat the costly mistake of his predecessors who defiantly and deliberately refused to support or even grant a meeting which President Muhammadu Buhari requested for on 7 November, 2014 with Ohanaeze, in a letter where Buhari requested for a consultative meeting to determine and discuss how to meet the expectations of Ndigbo in a new Nigeria.

Eze noted that if Nwodo had carefully gone through that letter, maybe the sound of his drums of war could have been more mature, diplomatic and better couched to harvest the hand of fellowship extended by Mr President, in the congratulatory message, expressing his readiness to work with the new Ohaneze leadership.

He wondered why Nwodo should be beating the drums of war, descend into the parochial arena and unduly incite the good people of Igboland when this golden opportunity to engage Mr President meaningfully offered itself.

“We cannot forget that Chief Nwodo is an elder statesman who enjoyed the ministerial perquisites of Hausa leadership under the second republic President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari and the emergency rule of General Abdusalam Abubakar, where a state or local governments can be created on the dining table?

“Or where was Chief Nwodo when we had our brother His Excellency Anyim Pius Anyim, as Secretary to Government of the Federation, our dear sister, Dr Mrs Ngozi Ökonjo-Iweala as Minister of Finance and Coordinator of our Economy, our two dear Professors – Barth Nnaji and Chinedu Nebo as Ministers of Power and yet our roads decayed and Enugu Coal remain abandoned? He querried.

On the issue of federal roads, Eze reminded Chief Nwodo that when South-East traditional rulers recently visited President Buhari, he extolled the virtues of Ndigbo and hinted how he had mobilized contractors for federal roads in South East, which previous regimes deliberately dithered on.

He said Ndigbo should be mindful that their roads were abandoned, in spite of their overwhelming and consistent vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where their brothers and sisters got plum jobs, including SGF, Finance Minister, Deputy Senate President, Deputy Speaker and chairmen of Works Committees in the Senate and House of Representatives.

He recalled that “Enugu Coal, which Buhari has concluded plans to revamp and utilise to generate electricity, suffered the same fate with our roads in the hands of regimes, which we so loved and which so loved Ndigbo, where at a stretch of five years, two of our illustrious sons, professors for that matter, were ministers of power, yet Enugu Coal remains idle.”

Eze said Nwodo should have embarked on introspection first, call on the Ndigbo to invest more in Igboland and not repatriation.

He wondered if the Ohanaeze leader was not aware that not only Abakiliki and Aba roads were included in items the $29.9 billion loan package, but nationwide projects like the electricity transmission, super line and Social Investment Programmes.

Citing the words of the elders that if you praise the brave, he does more, Eze said Buhari administration deserved to be applauded for mobilizing for infrastructure and the progress made so from the construction of South-East federal roads and the approval of additional N14.4 billion by the Federal Executive Council to put the construction of the Second Niger Bridge on top gear.
